Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso, former Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has been appointed as Ghana’s High Commissioner to the Republic of India.
His appointment marks a significant step in Ghana’s diplomatic relations with one of its key international partners, and a recognition of Prof. Obiri-Danso’s decades-long service in academia, research, and leadership.
A seasoned microbiologist and academic leader, Prof. Obiri-Danso served as Vice-Chancellor of KNUST from 2016 to 2020, during which he led several initiatives that enhanced the university’s global visibility, improved infrastructure, and strengthened industry-academia collaboration. Under his tenure, KNUST earned international accolades and solidified its standing as one of Africa’s top science and technology institutions.
Prior to his vice-chancellorship, he held various key positions within the university, including Provost of the College of Science, Dean of the Faculty of Biosciences, and Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Biology.
Prof. Obiri-Danso’s diplomatic appointment is expected to boost Ghana–India relations in education, health, trade, technology, and culture. India remains a strategic partner to Ghana in areas such as pharmaceutical exports, ICT collaboration, scholarships, and infrastructural development.
